The Irish Chain Quilt is thought to have originated in the US, around 1815, but there are similar designs on quilts dating back to around 1800 from Ireland (in Ireland, these quilts are often called American Chain Quilts).  We know that this popular style of quilt was used as a showcase for quilters to display in the large solid areas either the woman’s embroidery capabilities, or intricate quilting designs.  There are some early American quilts that use this solid area to display different appliques or signatures (for an autograph quilt).

This Double Irish Chain Patchwork Quilt measures 98 x 118 and fits a Queen bed.  Quilted by Lancaster Mennonite in PA Dutch country. There are approximately  7  handquilted stitches per inch.

Pieced by Irene, a Mennonite woman who loves to sew, quilt and give to her church and community (in Lancaster County PA), this Double Irish Chain Patchwork Quilt displays wonderful quilting, and is a fine example of why this pattern of patchwork was so popular.  Displayed in the center area of each block is the fanned plate quilting, done in fine, even stitches.

The color burgundy is more on the bright side, very similar to the tones in the closeup photo with the tape measure going diagonally across it

This quilt comes with a free fabric storage bag.
