The Courthouse Steps Patchwork is a variation of the very popular Log Cabin Quilt design, and has been found on textiles dating back as far as the middle of the 1700s. Because it is a basic geometric design, the pattern of dark steps going up to a lighter center is even found in the mummys wrappings from Egypt. In the mid 1800s, American women were entering Courthouse Steps Patchwork Quilts into local county fairs, thus securing their popularity with quilters nationwide.
This Courthouse Steps Patchwork Quilt measures 89 x 107 inches to fit your Double or Queen bed. A wonderfully bold quilt, done in reds and blues, it was handquilted by a Lancaster County Mennonite Quilting Bee in the heart of PA Dutch country. There are different levels of quilters skill represented in this quilt, with the average being 6 handquilted stitches per inch.
A product of a real, old-fashioned quilting bee, you can see small areas of quilting that reflect the work done by a young girl (with probably around 5 handquilted stitches per inch). It would be natural for a young Mennonite girl to want to learn on this bright and happy quilt, and passing down this time-honored talent and art is a valued occurance in the Lancaster County community where this quilting bee was held.
This quilt comes with a free fabric storage bag.
